The Southern Cross hangs loosely in the sky
Against the black backdrop of eternity
pricked by the billions of the Milky Way
My thoughts drift back, back
My daughter
Cuddled, nestled in my arms
Treasure, yes, treasure
We stare up at the brilliant night sky
Unchanged then as it is tonight
But not us, not the both of us
Words fail me, now, when they should not
As I try to paint for you
The magical mystery of life that glowed
With love
Through every corner of my body
Watching her eyes watching the sky
I spoke of the stars and the suns
Of beauty and of eternity
My cheek alongside hers
Staring at the sky
My daughter and I
Communing through love
And now, here, and now
this night
Staring through old eyes
As eternity beckons me
with ever-hastening urgency
The sky is just the sky,
the stars are just the stars
